In our line of work, occupational therapists and assistants are at risk for experiencing burnout. Many therapists may not be aware of the six major external work factors that produce burnout, the personal and professional consequences, and what can be done at the individual and team level to proactively address it. This course provides information to help occupational therapists and OT assistants effectively deal with burnout using holistic, evidence-based strategies.

Course Details:

This course examines healthcare provider burnout and best practices for both the individual professionals and healthcare organizations to reduce and prevent it. Topics discussed include the definition of burnout syndrome, direct and indirect causes of burnout in the healthcare field, health and work outcomes resulting from burnout, costs to the industry and patient care as a whole, and strategies to effectively address burnout using holistic, evidence-based approaches. These strategies include the following: apply occupational therapy based models and models from other relevant fields to one’s unique life and work circumstances, perform self and team assessments,  set realistic S.M.A.R.T goals, learn the physiology of stress on our brains and bodies, and effective stress management. It also helps one understand how chronic stress exposure impacts mental and physical health and well-being, how to cultivate internal resources based in evidence for reducing healthcare provider burnout, building resilience, internal locus of control, cognitive reappraisal, coping, optimism, mindfulness/meditation practices, and gratitude.

 Those who take this course will learn to recognize/reduce exhaustion, a key component in burnout, through improving and sustaining physical, mental, and organizational energy through best practices in the areas of diet (as per a registered dietitian), sleep, physical organization, and team organization. Course takers will also learn about burnout factors related to their external locus of control. Topics include specific workplace and employer policies/procedures that contribute to burnout and how to modify them, the cost of employee turnover, improving employee engagement and productivity, setting realistic job demands, flexibility, control, leadership, physical work space, workplace culture, social community and support, and different types of rewards. Lastly, we will examine how healthcare providers advocate effectively and utilize negotiation tactics to lobby for the changes they wish to see in their workplace.


  • List the statistics and evidence regarding burnout’s impact on the roles of healthcare professionals (HCPs) and at the organizational level
  • Recognize and define burnout including associated components, causes specific to HCPs, and its’ impact on health and well-being, and occupational performance
  • Identify stress physiology; stress response; roles of the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex in response to stress; list the biggest contributors to daily stress and several strategies to address it in order to improve performance in desired roles, quality of life, health, and well-being
  • Identify evidence-based strategies in the areas of resilience, internal locus of control, coping, cognitive appraisal, optimism, mindfulness, gratitude in order to promote greater client factors (mental functions), performance skills, and greater participation in desired occupations.
  • Recognize how to reduce exhaustion through best practices in the areas of diet (as per special guest contributor and registered dietitian, Monica Auslander Moreno, MS, RD, LD/N)
  • Differentiate between chronotypes and list methods in which to adjust daily routine and sleep participation schedule accordingly in order to promote greater health and wellness
  • Recognize organizational energy, common traps, and how to address each trap and sustain optimal energy in order to promote optimal social participation and job performance
  • Recognize information regarding employee turnout and associated costs, engagement, presenteeism, and productivity in the USA vs. the globe to enhance work well-being
  • List the Mayo Clinic’s identified seven drivers of burnout and engagement and nine organizational strategies in order to increase individual and group work engagement
  • Recognize how contexts and demands at work including workload, job demands, scheduling, hours, and control contribute to HCP burnout and impact well-being and performance
  • Differentiate between leadership styles and characteristics of a wise leader in healthcare to promote greater job performance, team participation, and work well-being
  • Recognize how cultural work context and teamwork impact overall well-being of the organization and identify both healthcare and non-healthcare industry examples
  • Identify effective advocacy and self-advocacy techniques to promote occupational justice
  • Identify the tools in the workbook in order to perform extensive self-assessments including a stress audit, set realistic SMART goals, and implement techniques and strategies to reduce HCP burnout and promote greater well-being
